Types of Automatic Gates

Intelligent Security and Fire offer a range of gates that will accommodate the needs of our customers. When our surveyors visit you as part of our free site survey they will ask you about your requirements for any potential installation. When considering an installation there are a number of choices to be made; one of these is which kind of gate to choose. There are two main kinds of automatic gate, swing gates and sliding gates:

Automatic Swing Gates

A swing gate system is a pair of gates that swing open when operated using a remote control or an access control panel. This is the most common sort of gate. Swinging gates tend to be cheaper and easier to install than sliding gates, and are best installed in premises with space for the gates to swing inwards into the property, although it is possible to have swinging gates open outwards.

Intelligent Security and Fire’s swing gate systems provide security for both pedestrians and vehicles by safely controlling access to the premises. The gates will typically be operated by a single press of your remote control, the gates opening, allowing a delay, and then safely closing.

A Typical Automatic Swing Gate Installation

An Intelligent Security and Fire swing gate system is constructed from:

  • One or two wooden or metal gates, designed in order to fit in with the surroundings and your own requirements,
  • A pair of remote controls in order to operate the system from your vehicle,
  • A pair of gate operators- these are the mechanisms that open and close the gate,
  • A control panel with which to control access to the premises,
  • An intercom or numeric keypad, which can be used either for access control or entry without a remote control,
  • A pair of photoelectric cells. These are sensors that detect the presence of people or vehicles in the way of the gate in order to prevent accidents or damage to vehicles.
Once you have chosen your preferred type of gate, you need to select the type of mechanism used to operate it. In the case of Swing Gates, the way in which the gate is hung will affect which electric gate opener can be used. Intelligent Security and Fire offer three main types of Swing Gate motor:

Type 1 Swing Gate Motor - Above Ground Ram

The Above Ground Ram, also known as a worm driven gate operator, is an electro mechanical operator that can be used when installing new paired or single swing gates, whether wooden or metal. It can also be used to automate most pre-installed gates. The Above Ground Ram is ideal for large or heavy gates measuring up to 7 meters in width. It is easy to install, as no digging is needed. It is attached directly to the gate posts, and works by pivoting where attached in order to pull the gate open and push it closed.

Type 2 Swing Gate Motor - Above Ground Articulated Arm

The Above Ground Articulated Arm is ideal when other types of gate operator cannot be used because the pillar the gate is attached to is too large. They use a hinged arm to reach around the pillar and open the gate. The Above Ground Articulated Arm can be used for gates up to 4000mm each leaf in length, and, like the Above Ground Ram, can be used when installing paired or single swinging gates, whether wooden or metal. It can also be used to automate most pre-installed gates.

Type 3 Swing Gate Motor - Underground Gate Operators

The most popular method of swing gate automation, the Underground Gate Operator is discreet and does not affect the aesthetics of the gate it is attached to. The Underground Gate Operator can be used for gates up to 3500mm each leaf in length, and, like the above gates, can be used when installing paired or single swinging gates, whether wooden or metal. It can also be used to automate most pre-installed gates, and are available in either electro-mechanical or hydraulic versions.

Automatic Slide Gates

Sliding gate systems are mainly installed on commercial sites in order to manage site access. They are typically used in openings wider than 25 metres, but can be installed in smaller spaces and are often useful in cases where a swing gate system would otherwise be obstructed (for example by a steep incline).

There are two main kinds of sliding gate:

Tracked Sliding Gates

Tracked sliding gates slide along a groove that is set into the road. The gate has a beam at the bottom of the gate with a set of wheels set into it. This allows the gate to move smoothly. Any incline in the road could be problematic for a tracked sliding gate as the motor could be overworked.

Cantilever Sliding Gates

Cantilever sliding gates are constructed from an aluminium or steel beam and glide above a concrete base at a height of about 50-80 millimetres. These are required in cases where an incline in the road prevents a tracked sliding gate from being viable.

A Typical Automatic Sliding Gate Installation

A typical Intelligent Security and Fire sliding gate system is constructed from:

  • One sliding gate with wheels,
  • A single gate operator,
  • Tracking (this is the groove over which the gate runs),
  • A control panel with which to control access to the premises,
  • A pair of remote controls, in order to operate the system from your vehicle,
  • An intercom or numeric keypad, which can be used either for access control or entry without a remote control,
  • A pair of photoelectric cells. These are sensors that detect the presence of people or vehicles in the way of the gate in order to prevent accidents or damage to vehicles.

Sliding Gate Motors

Automatic Sliding Gate Motors are slightly more complicated to install than swing gate openers, as they require more preparation before installation. A flat gear or rack attaches to gate and a gear on the motor winds the gate open and closed. Which motor is used affects the racking that is used. Nylon is mainly used on residential-style gates. Mod4 steel racking is used for gates weighing up to 2600Kg, and Mod6 steel racking on gates up to 6000Kg.
