Gate Safety Certification

Intelligent Security and Fire now offer a Gate Safety Certification service. Our accredited engineers will visit your home or business premises, review how safe your system is, and advise you on precautions you can take.

Our engineers are qualified to give safety certificates based on an up-to-date knowledge of the Health and Safety Executive’s guidelines, including regulations BS EN 12453:2001, BS EN 12445:2001, BS EN 12635:2002, and BS EN 12604:2000.

In 2010 two incidents involving automatic gates occurred which resulted in the deaths of two children, and the HSE determined that the incident was in part due to the gates not adhering to these regulations.

Gate Safety Checklist

In order to ensure that your Automatic Gate System complies with UK regulation and is safe for everyday use, it is important that you make sure that you take a number of safety measures. This includes checking a number of things.

For gates that operate on a semi-automatic basis (i.e. gates that open only whilst you are holding down a button), it is important to check:

  • That your gate is regularly maintained by a qualified engineer, and that a record of your servicing history is kept.
  • That there is an alternative way for pedestrians to gain access to the property.
  • That it is clear to drivers and pedestrians that the gate is automated.
  • That the control cabinet is contained in a lockable weatherproof enclosure.
  • That when you operate the gate you have a clear view of the gate and its workings.

In the case of fully automatic gates (i.e. a gate that opens upon being activated by a device within a predetermined time), it is important to check:

  • That the gate is working according to regulations specifying the amount of force to be used.
  • That the person who will be using the gate has been trained in how to use the gate and is aware of the gate’s maintenance requirements.
  • That the control cabinet is contained in a lockable weatherproof enclosure.
  • That there is an alternative way for pedestrians to gain access to the property.
  • That your gate is regularly maintained by a qualified engineer, and that a record of your servicing history is kept.
  • That the gate has all safety features required for ensuring the safety of the user and any other pedestrians.

  • “I just wanted to thank you. They were lovely guys, I’ve been looking after various properties on this estate for some time and always struggled with ‘gate engineers’. They are either very expensive or unreliable or both! I would like to use John and Rob for all future maintenance and problems that we have.
